Painting camellias across the winter months into emerging spring is a treat I look forward to. Their beautiful buds, dark glossy leaves and large blossoms in every shade of red, pink and white are a feast for the eyes and otherwise pale landscape! In my world, it is "camellia season" in Charleston.
Toward the end of February, several people shared within a week that Piccolo Spoleto's upcoming juried art exhibit was accepting submissions open to anyone in South Carolina. I thought "I'll do it next year." But my love calmly said "yes. You are." It took me all of two seconds to know exactly what subject to paint: camellias!
Over 4 weeks I painted as though I was possessed, And, worked hard to capture their colors, beauty and whimsy. If I had to name the collection, it would be "Falling in Love", which is what I titled the first and largest painting. All four that I submitted are original charcoal, ink and acrylic on canvas and canvas panel. They are currently reserved for the possibility of hanging at the City Gallery during Piccolo Spoleto's juried art show should they be chosen. I've sent them off with Love and we'll see! Stay tuned.
